A supplemental anatomy course introducing the diagnostic imaging modality of ultrasound. Throughout this course the fundamental use and clinical application of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool will be explored through seven key examinations. In this course an overview of an e-FAST, AAA, Renal, Biliary, DVT, Basic Echo, and Lung scan will all be presented. Each scanning technique will introduce a relevant clinical case and guide course participants through the various relevant locations of interest and clinical concern.

Alan J. Detton, PhD, received his Doctorate from The Ohio State University in Anatomy Education. Upon graduation, Dr. Detton accepted a lecturer position at Stanford University, where he was a faculty member in the Department of Surgery, Division of Clinical Anatomy. Dr. Detton is the current author of Grant's Dissector 16th Edition and is currently completing a companion series of Grant's Dissection Videos to direct students on the methods of human dissection. While at Stanford University, Dr. Detton consulted with Anatomage as an anatomical expert for their curriculum products on the Anatomage Table. He has also been a Visiting Professor at St. George's University, American University of the Caribbean, University of California San Francisco and the University of Pacific. He is currently teaching part time at the University of California San Diego.

Dr Khanh Nguyen received her Bachelor of Science and Commerce degree in 2005 from University of Sydney. She then received a post graduate MBBS medical degree at the University of Sydney and completed emergency training with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine in 2017. Dr Nguyen currently works as a full time emergency physician at both peripheral and major tertiary referral centres in Sydney, Australia. Dr Nguyen's interests include ultrasound and medical education, and in 2017 she became the program director for the Master of Medicine in Critical Care with the University of Sydney. She is the unit coordinator for the Point of Care Ultrasound unit of study within the Masters program.

David Resuehr

PH.D., ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CELL, DEVELOPMENTAL & INTEGRATIVE BIOLOGY

Dr. Resuehr received his Ph.D. in biology from the University of Hamburg in 2004. He then continued his research at Florida State University, where his research began with circadian rhythms and fertility and later became focused on women's reproductive health, specifically the condition endometriosis and the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in it. As both a scientist and passionate teacher, Dr. Resuehr first took “Gross Anatomy and Embryology” at FSU and then was accepted into the Vanderbilt University “Scientist Educator Program” where he was trained in gross anatomy instruction for three years. He has since taught anatomy to students of several health science disciplines, including Physical Therapy, Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry and Nursing Anesthesia. One of Dr. Resuehr's special interests is imaging techniques, specifically ultrasound, and their utility in understanding three dimensional anatomy. He is the co-creator of the first intensive week-long ultrasound special topics course for rising second year medical students at UABSOM which is taught annually since 2014. He is Director of the Anatomy Lab Teaching Associate Course and Director of Gross Anatomy of the Head and Neck for Students of Optometry. His research interests are in circadian rhythms and women's reproductive health and in didactic strategies in adult learning, including computer/web-based applications and team-based learning (TBL) activities. He has received several teaching awards, among these is the highest distinction from UAB, the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching.
