Let’s take a look at an example of how certain foods can affect our digestive health.
In a healthy gut, nutrients are absorbed by small structures called villi which line the intestines. In celiac disease, gluten — which is a protein present in wheat — triggers an immune response causing inflammation and damage to the villi.
This means that the villi can no longer absorb nutrients properly, which can result in bloating, weight loss and diarrhea.
About one percent of the world’s population are affected by celiac disease.
